    (a)      State the steps involved in performing backward roll   in gymnastics.              [5 marks]

      (b)      State five characteristics of somersault in gymnastics.           [5 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) candidates could not correctly state the steps involved in performing backward roll in gymnastics.  In part (b) candidates could not correctly state characteristics of somersault in gymnastics.

However, the expected answers are as follows:                    

    9(a)    Steps in Performing Backward Roll in Gymnastics

  •    assume a squat position
  •    the back towards the mat
  •    palms open and facing upward
  •    roll on back gently with the chin close to the chest and the legs swing

         over the head

  •    push hard with the palms downward on the mat
  •    finish in squat position

 
    (b)    Characteristics of  Somersault in Gymnastics

  •    it is an air borne activity/explained
  •    there is no break in the activity once it is started
  •    it involves double take-off
  •    it involves turning of the body at 360o
  •    it is an individual activity
  •    it involves landing on both feet with the arms stretched forward
