(a) Define the term appliqué.

(b) State any four uses of appliqué.

(c) Identify the origin of the following cloth types:

i. Adinkra;

ii. Aso-oke;

iii. Akwete

iv. Adire;

v. Kente.

 

Observation

The question was attempted by many of the candidates. Candidates performed averagely. They were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:

(a) Definition of Applique

-           It is an aspect of needlework relating to design and picture making.
-           Applique is the art of cutting shapes from pieces of cloth and
sewing/gluing them onto a larger piece of fabric to form designs and patterns.
-           Applique is the method of making dresses by the application of cut out
shapes from one coloured material onto the surface of another by either gluing/stitching/sewing.

(b)                    Uses of Applique
-           It is used as royal art.
                        -           It is used as court art.
-           The cloth tells the history of the kingdom.
-           It is usually attached to a black or gold background.
-           It is also done on banners and umbrellas used by royals and nobles.
-           It is used as costumes.
-           It is used by the masquerades.

(c)                    Origin of the following cloth types
(i)         Adinkra           -           Ghana.                        
(ii)        Aso- oke          -           Nigeria.                      
(iii)       Akwete           -           Nigeria.                      
(iv)       Adire               -           Nigeria.
