(a) Write notes on Vincent Van Gogh with particular reference to:                                     

i. nationality;

ii. specialization;

iii. training;

iv. style.

(a) State any four of his contribution to the development of art.

(b) List any one example of his artworks.

 

Observation

The question was attempted by few candidates.The candidates’ performance was poor. They were expected to respond to the question in this manner:

(a)        Notes on Vincent Van Gogh
(i)         -           Dutch.
(ii)        -           Painting.                                             
(iii)       -           Self trained.
-           Learnt from copying prints. Also learnt from books by Jean-Francis Millet and CharlesBargue
-           Influenced by works of great artists like Millet, Daumier, and Rembrandt.
-           Influenced by his experience as an art dealer.
-           Gained experience from his brother’s gallery.
-           Received encouragement from other artists.
(iv)       -           Adopted broken colours with sharp brush strokes.
-           Use of brilliant colours with brush /palette knife.
-           Use of thick paint textures.
-           Use of bold dramatic brush strokes to effect contours on his shapes.
-           Adopt post impressionism style of painting.
-           Use of impasto technique.
