SUMMARY OF CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES AND SUGGESTED REMEDIES

Candidates weakness were observed as follow:
Inability to

  • express in simple and clear language;
  • explain the following terms used in clothing and textiles: mercerization, scotch-guard, mordant;
  • differentiate with the aid of diagrams between plain and basket weave;
  • list the different types of fabrics produced from linen;
  • give examples of fabrics produced from yarn;
  • suggest a decorative way of mending a hole at the front knee of the pair of trousers;
  • state a suitable opening with a corresponding fastening for the front of the pair of trousers;
  • differentiate between the following as used in clothing and textiles: calico patch and print patch, repair and remodelling;
  • list qualities of fabrics used for interfacing;
  • sketch the front and back view of a man’s jumper and include the following features: decorative slit faced opening, shirt sleeve, yoke;
  • mention uses of nylon in the manufacturing industry.

 

To overcome these weaknesses,

  • Teachers should devote more time on practical aspect of the subject.
  • Adequate textbooks for students should be provided to enhance learning.
  • Candidates should be made to produce sample articles on each topic taught.
  • Teachers should be encouraged by organizing seminars and workshop for them.
  • Teachers should explain the terminologies used in clothing and textiles to the students.
