(a) (i) What is recreation?
(ii) State four characteristics of a recreational activity;
(b) Mention four values of an intramural sports programme.
Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.
In part (a)(i) candidates correctly defined recreation and in (ii) candidates could not correctly state
characteristics of a recreational activity they muddled up the answers by writing to motivate the crowd
or people and to educate the young generation.
In part (b) candidates could not correctly mention values of an intramural sports programme they mentioned wrong answers such as to provide exercise, accepting defeat after playing and losing, increase or promote
values, provides the necessary equipment and to learn the important values.
The expected answers are:
5(a)(i) RECREATION
Recreation is concerned with those activities in
which a person voluntarily participates during
his leisure hours/free hours/time
(ii) CHARACTERISTICS OF A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY
- it is leisure time activity
- it must be satisfying/enjoyable to the participant
- it is voluntary
- it is constructive/not physically/socially harmful
- it is non – survival activity/not for monetary gain
- it is not for competition
(b) VALUES OF INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAMME
- it provides opportunity for physical activities/competitions
- promotes good physical and mental health of the participants
- creates avenue where spirit of sportsmanship/leadership and team spirit can be developed
- creates avenue where students can meet socially and compete without rancour/friendship/unity/co-operation
- provides opportunity for self discovery/means of discovering talents by sports organizers
- development of permanent interest in sports
- development of sports skills.
