Question 6
6. (a) (i) Name the two types of skeleton    [2 marks]

(ii) in a tabular form, state two differences between the processes of breathing in and breathing out  [4 marks]
(b) Name the type of joint found at the:
- elbow;
 - knees;
 - shoulder;
 - hip [4 marks]

Observation
This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) candidates could not correctly name types of skeleton they wrote wrong answers such as        exo-skeleton and endo-skeleton, in (ii) also candidates also wrote wrong answers such as oxygen  expansion of stomach, inhalation and contraction of lungs for breathing in while carbon dioxide contraction of stomach, exhalation and expansion of lungs for breathing out.  In part (b) candidates also mix up the answers of elbow, knees, shoulder and hip with one another, the gave wrong answers such as elbow; pivot, ball and socket, knee; ball and socket, gliding, shoulder; hinge and gliding, hip; hinge and gliding.
The expected answers are as follows:
    6(a)(i)   TYPES OF THE SKELETON
    -   axial skeleton
    -   appendicular skeleton
(ii) DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE PROGRESSES OF BREATHING IN AND OUT
         BREATHING IN                                     BREATHING OUT
- diaphragm contracts and flattens          -         diaphragm relaxes and become
  dome  shaped
  - intercostal muscles contract                 -      intercostal muscles relax
  - rib cage pulls upward and outward       -            ribs move downward
  - the lungs expand and draw air in through the nose    - lungs shrink back to normal the relaxed size forcing air out.

  (b)  TYPES OF JOINT FOUND AT THE
(i) elbow        -     hinge joint
  (ii) knee         -    hinge joint
  (iii shoulder       -    ball and socket joint
  (iv) hip          -    ball and socket joint
