1. Demonstrate skillfully a discus throw covering a good distance, paying attention to the grip, stance, release and recovery. [25 marks]
Observation
This  question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance was  fair. They were not too familiar with the skills involved in discus throw.
However,  the expected answers are as follows:
 
Activity 1:       Discus  throw and distance covered.
Procedure: Each candidate is allowed to perform three trials of discus throw.
Use  the scale of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 to rate the candidate’s performance on grip, 
    stance,  release and recovery.

All  performances will be judged according to the following rubrics.
    Grip 
    (i)        hand is placed flat on the discus
    (ii)       tips of the fingers overlap the discus  edge
    (iii)      hand holds the discus firmly
    (iv)      the wrist should be locked
    (v)       thumb gives support to other fingers for  firm grip
Stance 
    (i)         assume astride standing position
    (ii)        siding the direction of throw/landing  sector/area
    (iii)       legs planted firmly on the ground
    (iv)       hand holding the implement extended  backward
    (v)        other hand is relaxed
Release
(i)        the discus is swung to meet the other  hand 
    (ii)        at the shoulder level to gather momentum
    (iii)       focus on target closer to the metal rim
    (iv)       discus is released forcefully
    (v)        the index finger gives the final spin at  release
Recovery
                
    (i)        both legs must be behind the metal rim           
    (ii)       athlete/thrower gently withdraws
    (iii)      athlete/thrower maintains balance
    (iv)      athlete/thrower remains within the  throwing sector until the implement lands
    (v)       athlete/thrower leaves from the rear of  the throwing circle  
Product Evaluation
The  distance covered is recorded in metres and read off the conversion table.  The best of the trials will be recorded as the score.
