OBSERVATION

All the candidates were unable to:
           

  • state the reasons for checking the accuracy of setting out before commencing construction work;
  • sketch the club hammer and builder’s square used for setting out correctly;

 

  • explain the difference between batching concrete by volume and batching concrete by weight.

The expected response to question 3 as given below:

3 (a)    Reasons for checking the accuracy of a setting out
            To ensure that:
           

  • a right-angle corner of a building;
  • the building is erected on the correct plot of land;
  • the overall sizes (length and breadth) are according to those shown on the drawing;
  • regard is paid to the local building regulation;
  • mistakes which may proof too costly to amend at a later stage are avoided.

            (c)        Difference between batching concrete by volume and by weight.
Batching by volume is the process of measuring out the quantities of concrete constituent according to a specified ratio with the aid of a gauge-box while batching by weight is the process of measuring out the quantities of concrete constituent to a specified ratio by means of weighing device.
