(a)        List any four steps involved in planning a rough piece of timber to width
                                    and thickness.

                        (b)        Make a pictorial sketch of each of the following timber defects:
(i)         dead knot;
(ii)        bowing.

                        (c)        Sketch each of the following:
(i)         butt hinge;
(ii)        round head wire nail.

Observation

Few candidates were able to:

                        -           list four steps involved in planning a rough piece of timber to width and
thickness;
-           make a pictorial sketch of dead knot;
-           sketch butt hinge and round head wire nail.

                        However, most of them failed to:

  • list four steps involved in planning a rough piece of timber to width and thickness.
  • make a pictorial sketch of bowing.

  • select the face side;
  • plane the face side;
  • test for flatness;
  • put the first side mark;
  • select the f ace edge;
  • plane the face edge;

  • mark for thickness;
  • plane to thickness;
  • test for squareness and flatness.
