Question 1

(a) State four significance of contentment in the Nigerian society.

(b) Mention three negative effects of lack of contentment on the society.

Observation

This was a popular question. The performance of most candidates who answered it was good as they really understood its demands. Candidates did not do well in the (a) part of the question and they scored low marks, a major factor is failure of candidates in giving full explanations of points they merely mentioned, in some other cases, candidates used religious idea and morality and converted it to a general answer. However, they performed better in the (b) part of the question which complimented the scores in the part (a). The (a) part required full explanation and some of the candidates felt short and could only make skeletal explanations. Some of the answers candidates were expected to provide included:

 

(a) i. It discourages embezzlement/siphoning/misappropriation of funds.

ii. It discourages corrupt practices/fraudulent activities.

iii. It reduces the feeling of inferiority complex/promotes self –confidence.

iv. It engenders peace and development in the society.

v. It leads to self–reliance and respect for others.

vi. It eliminates envy and jealousy in the society.

vii. It reduces conflicts among individuals and groups in the society.

viii. It promotes dignity of labour /hard work/service orientation.

ix. It promotes human dignity.

x. It promotes good national image

 

(b) i. It leads to greed and avarice.

ii. It results in jealousy/dishonesty/wickedness.

iii. It promotes crimes such as robbery/ piracy/kidnapping/hostage-taking, etc.

iv. It leads to disunity/conflicts. v. It leads to false living/materialism.

vi. It breeds anarchy/total breakdown of law and order. vii. It retards national development.

viii. It leads to unhealthy rivalry/competition.
