Question 6

(a) State two functions of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

(b) Outline three functions of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Observation

This question was quite popular also and many candidates attempted it. The performance of most candidates who answered it was good as they really understood its demands. However, some candidates did not do well in the (b) part and they scored low marks as they mixed up functions of both regulatory bodies interchangeably. Expected answers the candidates could have given are:

 

(a) i. It coordinates all drugs laws and enforcement functions.

ii. It adopts measures to eradicate illicit cultivation of narcotic plants and eliminate demands for narcotic drugs.

iii. It investigates people suspected to have dealings with hard drugs and enforces laws against the cultivation, processing, sales and use of hard drugs.

iv. It adopts measures to increase the effectiveness of hard drug trafficking eradication efforts.

v. It promotes effective enforcement of law to suppress illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs/psychotrophic substances.

vi. It provides measures that will ensure the elimination and prevention of the root cause of the problem of narcotic drug/psychotrophic substances.

vii. It educates the public on the effects of hard drugs.

viii. It provides guidelines, approves and monitors advertisements of drugs.

ix. It conducts research and exchange scientific/technical information on the eradication of illicit drugs.

x. It strengthens effective legal means for international cooperation in criminal matters relating to illicit drug trafficking.

 

(b) i. It regulates and controls the importation and exportation of drugs.

ii. It regulate and controls the manufacturing, distribution and sale of drugs, cosmetics, etc

iii. It conducts inspections on imported foods, drugs, cosmetics so as to ensure quality.

iv. It certifies production sites of foods and drug-related products.

v. It registers foods, drugs, medical services, packaged water and chemicals.

vi. It engages in the investigation of raw materials for food, drugs, cosmetics etc

vii. It compiles standard regulations for production and importation of foods, drugs, cosmetics, etc.

viii. It establishes and maintains relevant laboratories or other institutions in strategic areas of Nigeria for proper performance of its functions.

ix. It controls the exportation and issuance of certificates on food, drugs, medical devises, water and chemicals.

x. It sponsors national and international conferences on its area of operation.
