QUESTION 2
(a)Explain the following printing techniques:
i. Relief;
ii. Silkscreen;
iii.Lino.
(b)List six materials used in silkscreen printing

Observation

Only a few candidates attempted the question and the overall performance was average. Most of these class of candidates were able to unable to satisfactorily explain the given printing techniques and were unable to differentiate between tools and material, thereby listing tools instead of materials used in silkscreen printing. This makes them to loose some marks. They were expected to respond to the question thus:

(a) Explanation of some printing technique

  1. Relief: It is a technique of printing that involves the creation of patterns/designs on a metal/wooden block. The edges of the motif on the block are chiseled or scrapped to allow the motif to stand out in relief. The raised surface is then inked and stamped on a fabric/cloth to register the impression.
  2.   Silkscreen: It is a technique of stretching silk mesh over a wooden frame, blocking out chosen areas by various methods and making a print on fabric/cloth by forcing ink through the unblocked areas, using a squeegee.
  3.   Lino: It is a technique in which a motif is drawn on a lino sheet to produce a design. The unwanted areas of the motif are cut out to make the motif stand out. Ink is thereafter applied to the motif using a roller/brayer and hand printed on a fabric to register/create impressions.

(b) Materials used in silkscreen printing:

> Fabric/Cloth; Ink; Bichromate; Emulsion; Water; Rag; Retarder; Turpentine; Masking tape; Paper tape; Foam; Paper (e.g. newsprint); Tracing paper; Kerosene; Soap/detergent.
