Candidates’overall performance was below average. The question was unpopular and only a few candidates attempted it. Most of these candidates were unable to differentiate between tools and materials. They also failed to state ways to maintain a tjanting and to care for a slab of wax. These made them to lose some marks. They were expected to respond to the question in the following manner:


(a)Object in Figure P is a tool while object in Figure Q is a material     

(b)(i)Tools for batiking:
Boiling ring/Water heater; Scissors; Electric/Coal pressing iron; Spoon; Industrial/Safety/Rain boots; Rubber/Hand gloves; Apron/Overall; Nose mask/guard; Mouth mask/guard; Padded table/Table; Safety glasses/Sun shade/Goggles; Kettle; Jug; Thumb nail/Pins; Bowl/Bucket; Stamp; Metal stencil; Pencil; Ruler; Brush; Pot; Heat source (e.g. stove, gas cooker, hot plate, coal pot); Stirrer/Turning stick; Cutting knife/blade.

(ii)Materials for batiking:
100% Cotton (fabric/cloth); Soap/Detergent; Water; Pomade/Petroleum jelly; Motif; Paper stencil; Chalk; Rag; Foam; Masking tape/Cellotape; Paper/Cardboard; Starch paste; Dye; Chemicals (e.g. hydrosulphite, caustic soda, etc.).       

(c)(i)Ways to maintain a tjanting:

  • It should be kept from reach of children.
  • It should be greased after use to avoid rust.
  • It should be kept in the studio or cupboard after use.
  • It should be washed with hot water to remove wax residue.
  • It should be wiped/cleaned with a rag.

(ii)Ways to maintain a of slab of wax:

  • It should be stored at room temperature or in a cool/dry place.
  • It should be kept away from reach of children.
  •  It should be cut with appropriate tools to avoid wastage.
  • Avoid contact with fire/heat.
