The question was popular among the candidates and the candidates performed excellent in this question.  Most candidates exhibited a good knowledge of tying techniques and were able to give the appropriate response to the question. The following points were given by the candidates to obtain the maximum marks:

(a) Identification of tying techniques

  1. Figure X is knotting/tied circles technique                                                    
Figure Y is twisting/spiral/coiling technique

(b)Steps in achieving the above:

    (i)knotting technique
  • Get all the materials ready such as fabrics, twine, etc.
  • Clean the work place/studio to ensure safety.
  • Wash the fabric to remove industrial starch (i.e. desize).
  • Dry the fabric.
  • Spread the fabric on a flat surface.
  • Hold both ends of the fabric and twist.
  • Knot the twisted fabric.
  • Tie at intervals to produce knots.   
  • (ii)twisting technique
  • Get all the materials ready such as fabrics, twine, etc.
  • Clean the work place/studio to ensure safety.
  • Wash the fabric to remove industrial starch (i.e. desize).
  • Dry the fabric.
  • Spread the fabric on a flat surface.
  • Twist/coil the fabric to achieve a spiral effect.
  • Tie the fabric after twisting/coiling, if necessary.
          

(c)  Tying techniques that use strings:

  1. Folding;
  2. Pleating/Accordion pleating;
  3. Twisting/Coiling/Spiral;
  4. Tied circles/Knotting;
  5. Clamping;
  6. Clumping/Clump tying;
  7. Stitching;
  8. Bunching;
