Weakness and Remedies

 

Candidates’ weaknesses include their inability to:

  • express their thoughts correctly;
  • write correct spellings for scientific words;
  • interpret questions correctly
  • write legibly;
  • differentiate between definition, explanation and listing;
  • differentiate between methods and equipment;
  • draw a fish pond;
  • differentiate between capture fisheries and culture fisheries;
  • write complete word for pH meter or dissolved oxygen meter as many wrote meter without the pH or dissolved oxygen.

 

The following remedies were suggested to overcome these weaknesses:

  • textbooks that cover a wide range of the syllabus should be used by the teachers and candidates;
  • teachers should increase their efforts in pond construction teaching;
  • teachers should endeavour to get previous marking schemes in teaching the students what is expected of them during examination;
  • teachers should emphasize on legible hand writing for students;
  •  teachers should endeavour to cover the syllabus for students before the commencement of the examination;
  • students should cultivate habit of reading;
  • candidates shold cultivate the habit of reading and understanding what a question requires before attempting to answer them;
  • teachers should give students task that will improve their spellings of technical and scientific words;
  • teachers should endeavour to teach both simple and difficult topics in the syllabus;
  • candidates should be more exposed to diverse ways of answering application questions;
  • emphasis on teaching candidates’ anatomical and correct scientific words;
  • teachers should participate in WASSCE marking and coordination exercise;
  • schools should have standard fish farms to bridge the gap between theory and practical;
  • models should be used in teaching and instruction of fisheries;
  • teachers and school administrators should always utilize the WASSCE Chief Examiners Reports for previous diets of WASSCE exams in the preparation of candidates for external examinations.
