This was an unpopular question among the candidates and the few who answered it performed just fairly. Some of those who answered it were able to outline the reasons for the low population density in the Amazon
Basin. However, many could not give the measures to be taken in increasing the population of the area. The measures to be taken to increase the population of the Amazon Basin include:
construction of more roads to link the interior;
improvement in river transport in the Basin;
provision of capital for the development of the Basin;
improvement in medical facilities in the Basin;
industrialization, especially wood processing and lumbering;
investment in education/manpower development;
encouragement of immigration;
provision of social amenities;
modern agricultural practices;
provision of employment opportunities;
incentives to large family.
