Explain five reasons for the study of government.

Observation

This was a popular and straight forward question. All the candidates who attempted it performed very well and scored high marks. Nevertheless, some candidates deprived themselves good marks by merely listing the points without further explanation. Candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:

 

  1. To have knowledge of how the state is managed and governed/Functions of government.

  2. To be abreast with national and global political occurrences/developments.

  3. To be equipped with the basic knowledge of one’s rights and how to defend them when violated.

  4. Deepens the understanding of international relations and a state’s commitment to international organizations.

  5. Creates interest for active political participation.

  6. Inculcates in citizens the spirit of patriotism/nationalism.

  7. To understand the different political systems/types of government with their advantages and disadvantages.

  8. Offers opportunity for leadership training.

  9. Provides knowledge of the political history of the state.

  10. Helps provide knowledge of the political history of the state.

  11. Helps provide solutions to socio- political and economic problems by the introduction of programmes and policies and best practices in other political environments.

  12. Provides basis to compare governments.

  13. Provides career opportunities.

  14. It enables us to know our duties, responsibilities and obligations as citizens.

  15. It teaches us to be objective in our analysis of political issues.

  16. It helps the individual to develop a positive political culture.
