Describe the importance of the Usman dan Fodio's jihad in the history of Nigeria.

Observation

This was another popular question among the candidates. Some candidates did not take note of Nigeria but also discussed the importance to other parts of the world. Some even focused on Dan Fodio as a person. The overall performance was however about average. Those who scored high marks were able to describe the following points:
(i)  it led to conversion of people to Islam;
(ii) islamisation of various parts of Nigeria also meant imposition of Arabic culture;
(iii) the Jihad was an instrument of large scale state formation in Nigeria as it united the numerous Hausa states into a Fulani empire (the Sokoto caliphate);
(iv) the Jihad eliminated the old instruments of administration. The structures of government such as the system of justice, and taxation was based on classical Islamic Models;
(v) the Islamic state established, was centralized;
(vi)  hitherto separate communities were brought under one political system;
(vii) the Jihad hastened the collapse of the ancient QYQ Empire;
(viii) it led to increase in Islamic education and literary works;
(ix) it led to the purification of Islam in Nigeria.
