Highlight any five roles played by the Christian missionaries in the suppression of the trans-Atlantic slave trade in Nigeria.
Observation
This question was popular among the candidates and the few ones who attempted it did not find the question difficult to answer. They understood the demands of the question and identified the required points to score high marks. Some of the candidates failed to improve on their points and scored low marks. To get good marks, candidates were expected to mention the following points:
 (i)   The missionaries condemned the slave trade by preaching  against it.
    (ii)  They established educational  institutions which enlightened the people about the 
    the slave trade.
    (iii) They also established vocational centres  to provide skills as alternative to the slave trade.
    (iv) Christian  missionaries appealed to their home missions for support against 
    the  slave trade.
    (v) They  also lobbied their home governments for support in the fight against
    the slave trade.
    (vi) They persuaded the British  officials to sign treaties with the African chiefs to ensure
    an end to the slave trade.       
    (vii)  They introduced cash crops to promote agriculture.
    (viii)They established experimental farms.
