Question 9

  • A(Lat 43°N, Long 77°E), B(lat 43°N, Long 103°w) and

C (Lat 57°s, Long 77°E) are three points on the surface of the earth.  Find the distance from:

    • A to B along latitude 43°N;
    • A to C along the great circle joining the two points.

{Take p = 3.142 and R = 6400 km)

            (b)        In triangle XYZ, /XY/ = 9cm  /XZ/ = 10cm and <YXZ = 75°.  Find /YZ/.

Observation

This question was reported to have been attempted by majority of the candidates and they performed well in it.  However, some of them used 22/7 for p instead of the given figure of 3.142.  Others could not draw the diagram correctly.

 In part (a)(i), longitudinal difference = 180°, therefore the required distance
= 180 x 2 x 3.142 x 6400 cos 43° = 14.706.65km.
   360
For part (a)(ii), latitudinal difference = 100° therefore required distance
= 100 x 2 x 3.142 x 6400   = 11,171.56km.
   360

            In part (b), candidates were able to draw the diagram.

Majority of the candidates were able to apply the cosine rule correctly as required to obtain /YZ/2 = 92 + 102 – 2 x 9x 10 cos 75° which after a little computation gave /YZ/ = 11.59
