Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. Only few candidates that understood the question performed fairly.   In part (a)(i), candidates could not correctly list types of short in basketball game instead, they listed skill in handball game.  In (a)(ii), candidates correctly state instances which require stopping the game clock in a basketball game.  In part (b)(i) candidates could not correctly state duties of the second referee during a game of volleyball and in (b)(ii) candidates could not differentiate between a point and a set in the game of volleyball.  In part (c) candidates could not correctly state rules guiding the game of handball.  in Part (d) candidates correctly mention skills in a hockey game.
However, the expected answer were as follows:
4(a) (i) Types of shot in basketball game

  • set shot/named
  • lay-up shot
  • jump shot/named
  • hook shot
  • two-hand underhand shot
  • one-hand and two-hand push shot
  • two hand set shot
  • one hand set shot
  • free throw shot

(ii)        Instances which require stopping the game clock in a basketball game

  • when a foul is committed
  • when time-out is called
  • at the end of each quarter
  • when there is an injury
  • for the removal of a disqualified player
  • for suspension of play for any reason during the last three minutes of the game/extra period.

(b) (i)  Duties of the second referee during a game of Volleyball

  • he checks time-out
  • he assists the referee
  • he indicates net offences
  • he indicates centre line offences
  • He signs the score sheet at the end of the game
  • He indicates rotational fouls

(ii)       Differences between a point and set in volleyball game

            A point is a unit of scoring made from service and during rally/explained

            While

            A set is made up of at least 25 points/explained

(c)       Rules guiding playing the game of handball

  • a player can hold the ball for more than three seconds
  • a player is not allowed to take more than three steps while holding the ball/travel
  • a player is not allowed to kick the ball with the legs
  • a player is not allowed to snatch the ball from an opponent
  • a player is not allowed to obstruct opponent
  • no player is allowed to enter the goal area except the goalkeeper.
