Candidate's Strengths

The candidates’ weaknesses include their inability to:

- practice skills very well before the performance test

- assume a position well behind a restraining line and use chest pass to propel the ball in a game of basketball at a target marked on a wall.

- use the forehand drive, hit a table tennis ball continuously against an upright surface for 30 seconds. - execute the forehand clear, by hitting the shuttle from the badminton back court, high and deep into the opposite half of the court.

- skillfully demonstrate body position, hand position, hand placement, head position, roll over and recovery while performing forward roll.

- skillfully demonstrate body position, hand position hand placement, head position roll over and recovery while performing forward roll.

- skillfully demonstrate approach, hand placement take-off-leg position and landing in the performance of astride vault.

 

The following remedies were suggested to overcome these weaknesses:

- schools should involved their students in physical education skills and practical training for mystery of skills demonstration

- schools should also be informed/give orientation to candidates/students that will register for physical education about the performance test/sport assessment.

- adequate information/sensitization of schools through zonal and branch offices during registration. - schools should buy sports equipment and missile meant for physical education

- government should build sports/facilities and supply equipment to schools to facilitate easy learning of physical education.

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.
In part (a), candidates could not correctly define sprint races.
In part (b)(i) and (ii) candidates could not correctly state  duties of a referee in an athletics event they missed duties of referee in athletics with the referee in ball games and gave wrong answers such as gives materials to the officials, ensures proper start of the event and end of the event, punishes offenders of the rules of the game and makes sure all facilities are provided.  Candidates also wrote wrong answers for duties of a starter’s assistant such as assist in starting races, starts the race with shooting of gun, helps to recall false start, helps in determining half time and full time, represents the starter if absent by shooting gun and helps other officiating officials over-time.  However, the expected answers are as follows:

-           inspects equipment and athletes to confirm compliance/safety regulations
-           presides over the meeting/gives final decision

  •       settles all disputes
  •       checks and signs all results of events before announcement
  •       records/certifies new records 
  •       makes sure that rules are obeyed

(ii)  DUTIES OF A STARTER’S ASSISTANT IN AN ATHLETICS EVENT
He/She :
-           checks that all competitors are competing in the correct heat/race
-           checks that all competitors are in their correct number of bibs/jerseys
-           watches for the position of the competitor’s hand and feet at the starting point

  •       assembles competitors for the start of the race
  •       signifies to the starter in readiness of athletes
      responsible for the readiness of relay baton
