(a)        (i)  State four instances when a player wins a point in a game of badminton.[4 marks]
(ii) State three differences between service in badminton game
   and service in tennis game.                                                                          [6 marks]
(b)   Explain the following terms in badminton:
            (i) clear;                                                                                                           [2 marks]
            (ii) drop shot.                                                                                                  [2 marks]
 (c)       (i) List four strokes in tennis game.                                                                [4 marks]
            (ii) state the order of service in singles game in table tennis.                         [2 marks]

Observation

 

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance was fair. In part (a) (i) many candidates were able to state instances when a player wins a point in a game of badminton. In part (a) (ii) many candidates could not state differences between service in badminton game and service in tennis game. In part (b) many candidates could not clearly explain clear and drop shot in badminton. In part (c) (i) many candidates correctly listed strokes in tennis game. In part (c) (ii) many candidates could not correctly state the order of service in singles game in table tennis.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

7(a)(i) INSTANCES A POINT IS WON IN A GAME OF BADMINTON

  • when an opponent
  • fails to make a good return
  • strikes the shuttle twice in succession
  • plays the shuttle outside the bounds of the court
  • touches the net with any part of the body/racket
  • plays the shuttle through/into the net
  • plays shuttle under the net

 (ii) DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SERVICE IN BADMINTON GAME AND  SERVICE IN TENNIS GAME

  • Service in badminton game is taken from inside the court while in tennis service is taken from outside the court
  • In badminton game, a served shuttle must not touch the ground/floor before it is returned when played, while in tennis a served ball must bounce on the opponent side of the court before it is played/returned
  • In badminton  game, a service delivered from underarm/shuttle is hit below the hips/waist while in tennis game, service is delivered from overhead/ball hit from above the head
  • In badminton  game, only one service trial is allowed while in tennis game two service trial are allowed
  • In badminton game, the shuttle cock is released downward before being hit while in tennis game the ball is tossed/thrown up before being played

(b) (i)  CLEAR
it is a stroke played high above the opponent at the net towards the baseline of the court

It is a stroke in which the shuttle drops very close to the net after crossing it

  • each player serves two points
  • service change alternately after every two service still the end of the game
