History Paper 2 Nov/Dec 2015

Question

  1. List any three objectives of the Commonwealth of Nations.
  2. Identify any four responsibilities of Nigeria as a member of the Commonwealth.

Observation

This was fairly popular with the candidates and most of those who attempted it got good marks. However, few candidates could not identify the objectives of the Commonwealth of Nations as required by part (a) of the question. Similarly for part (b), some candidates seemed not to understand the word ‘responsibilities’ as was contained in the question while other mixed up some points on Commonwealth with ECOWAS and even, United Nations. In part (a), candidates were expected to mention the following points:

  1. To foster relationship among former British colonies and with Britain;
  2. Respect for the sovereignty of member states;
  3. To serve as a forum for discussing common issues.

In order to score good marks in the (b) part, they were expected to discuss the following
points:

(i) Regular attendance at Commonwealth conferences and meetings;
 (ii)   prompt payment of dues;
(iii)  taking part in sports and cultural activities organized to foster friendship and unity;
(iv)  promotion of peace and unity within the organization.
