Comment on the theme of racism in the novel.

Observation

Candidates were expected to expatiate the following:
The fact that Richards' grandfather serves in the army during the civil war and he is denied of his pension until he dies. The ill-treatment Richards' receives when he works with the optician and his fight with Harrison on the
instigation of the whites. Blacks are deprived equal educational opportunities. They are denied the pleasure of reading books, access to health facilities and good jobs. Uncle Hoskins is killed because of his prosperity as a black man. When a black woman ignorantly trespasses on a white's property she is mercilessly beaten up.
Whites do not hesitate to brutalize blacks for not addressing them as 'sir' when talking with them, to show superiority and respect. Different queues for blacks and whites at the train station. Blacks are dehumanized
because of the racist attitude of the whites and treated as second class citizens. Many candidates opted to answer this question but few did very well
