(a)   Mention the:
(i)   two vertical jumping events in athletics.                  [2 marks]
(ii)   three techniques of flight in long jump event.               [3 marks]
(b)  State five situations in which a trial is declared ‘no jump’
in a long jump event.           [5 marks]

Observation

 

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance was fairly well. In part (a) (i)candidates did very well, but few ones wrote wrong answers such as long jump, triple jump e.t.c. In part (a)(ii) many candidates misconstrued the question. In part (b) they did badly in it, responses given by the candidates revealed that they were not conversant with the long jump event.
The expected answers are as follow:
(a) (i)   Vertical jumping events in athletics

  • high jump event
  • pole vault event                                                               

     (ii)  Techniques of flight in long jump event

  • sail
  • hang
  • hitch-kick                                                                        

(b)  Situations in which a trial is declared “no jump” in long jump event
If the athlete

  • touches the ground between the take-off board and the landing area/pit
  • takes off around the take-off board
  • somersaults after take-off
  • walks back through the pit after landing
  • falls outside the pit nearer the take-off board than where he landed
  • places checkmarks on the run-way
  • uses hand weights or grip of any sort
  • takes off on both feet
  • running through the landing pit
