Observation

 

    Candidates understanding of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) is low. However, they were able to max out the highest points attainable in the part c which made up for points lost in the b part. The right responses candidates were expected to give are.


    (a) Meaning of a tourist

A tourist is a person who travels to and stays in a place outside his/her usual place of residence for leisure, business, recreation, education or other purposes for a period not less than 24 hours and not more than one year.


    (b) Roles of Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC)              
  • To create enabling environment for tourism activities
  •              
  • To promote efficient service delivery
  •              
  • To publicize and promote Nigerian tourist attractions
  •              
  • To establish and enforce code of conduct for travel and business operators
  •              
  • To identify, assess and document tourism site for investment and promotion
  •              
  • To make tourism a major revenue earner in Nigeria
  •              
  • To plan and coordinate the development of tourist sites
  •              
  • Provides technical and advisory services to public and private sectors

 

    (c) Notes on tourist attractions in Nigeria
  • Museum: this is a place where historical and cultural objects are kept and preserved for posterity. People are allowed to pay visits to museums to familiarize themselves with the objects there and their history. In almost all states of Nigeria, there is a museum. It is a store house of information for educational research.

  • Zoological gardens: these are protected areas specially designed or constructed for the domestication of wild animals for exhibition. Animals which live in the wild forest are brought into the garden and kept in custody, usually in cages or glass houses or other forms of enclosure and are fed.
  •              
  • Wildlife reserve: this is where animals are allowed to live freely but in protected areas or environment. The animals are supposed to feed on their own and maintain a balanced ecosystem. The animals live in harmony with the environment and are protected from hunting, poaching or other commercial harvesting.
  •              
  • Monument: it is often applied to building or structures that are considered examples of important architectural/cultural heritage. It is a structure that is explicitly created to commemorate a person or important event which has become important to a social group or as part of their remembrance of cultural heritage. It is significant and legally protected by the community.
