Observation

 

This question was attempted by many candidates but not many of them could accurately differentiate between domestic and international tourism. The other parts were easy for candidates to answer as they were able to use it to make up for lost points in the (a) part. Below is ways candidates were supposed to have answered the question.

(a) Distinction between domestic and international tourism

Domestic tourism refers to travels for tourism purposes by residents within their country of residence without barriers of currency, language, or visa while international tourism involves travels for tourism purposes outside their country of residence and involving the use of different currencies, languages and visa.

  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Study/educational
  • Meetings/conferences

(c) Benefits of tourism statistics
  • Measures the level of tourism consumption  of other goods
  • Provides valuable trend data where information is produced over a number of times/periods
  • It contributes toward the database which may influence decision making
  • It helps public and private sector in planning
  • Enables the effects of decisions to be measured or monitored
  • It helps to evaluate the net flow of tourists
  • It provides a means for making forecast
  • Provides information on human resource characteristics
  • It allows meaningful infrastructural and tourism facilities development
  • It ensures adequate measurement of the economic impacts of tourism (satellite account)
