CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES
Candidates’ weaknesses include:
- Lack of proper understanding of some essay topics, some of them failed to write on the topics they chose while some of them did not write their points in sequential order. For instance, those who wrote on the topic ‘Ẹ̀kọ́ Ilé’ (Home Training) could not explain in details the meaning and benefits of home training to the family and the society at large. Some of the candidates failed to give appropriate greeting to their uncle in the informal letter.
- Lack of exposure to selected Literature texts (Oral and Written).
- Poor orthography e.g. dotting of letters, inappropriate use of tone marks.
- Inability to write correct spelling of terms in Yoruba.
- Lack of in-depth knowledge of the phonological aspect of the subject. Many of the candidates performed woefully in their attempt to identify active articulators of the given sounds and identification of the coda and nucleus of a syllable.
- Inability to identify noun phrases when the noun has a qualifier in sentences.
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
- Teaching of the subject by dedicated, competent and motivated teachers;
- Candidates should procure language textbooks and the set literature texts;
- Candidates should imbibe the habit of using the public library;
- Candidates should study the set texts thoroughly;
- Candidates should utilize their time well so that part of the time allocated to this paper could be used to read through their work so as to correct some of their mistakes in spelling and the use of punctuation marks.
- Candidates should equip themselves with the knowledge and correct usage of punctuation marks;
- Candidates should use appropriate tone marks, since Yoruba is a tonal language;
- Candidates should give special attention to the identified weaknesses in preparation for the examination.
