Explain five reasons for which Nigeria should continue to be a member of the African Union (AU).

Observation

This was a very popular question. The candidates performed averagely well in it. Although, the question is simple and clear, some candidates misunderstood it and lost good marks. The candidates were expected to provide the following as answers to the question.

 

  1. Assenting to Bills passed by the parliament.
  2. Making any appointments that the constitution or legislation requires the president to make.
  3. Appointing commission of inquiry.
  4. Appointing the Supreme Court Justices of Nigeria on advice of NJC.
  5. Appointing ambassadors/diplomats/consular and other federal officers.
  6. Pardoning or reprieving offenders/prerogative of mercy
  7. Conferring honours.
  8. Receiving and recognising foreign diplomatic and consular representatives.
  9. Declaration of war/state of emergency.
  10. Summoning the National Assembly or parliament to an extraordinary sitting to conduct special business.
  11. Calling a national referendum in terms of an Act of Parliament.
  12. Represented the country in the international community.
  13. Protect the constitution and sovereignty of the people of Nigeria.
  14. Referring a bill to the Supreme Court for decision on the bill’s constitutionality.
  15. Veto Power- refusal to sign a bill passed by the National Assembly.
  16. He prepared and presented the annual budget to the National Assembly for approval.
  17. He inaugurated the National Assembly at the beginning of each session.
  18. He performed ceremonial functions.
  19. He formulated policies for good governance.
