Outline five effects nationalist movement had on British West Africa before the end of the World War II.

Observation

This was a popular question and well attempted by most of the candidates. The performance of the candidates who answered it was good as they really understood its demands. However, those who failed were giving skimpy answers. The candidates were expected to give the following points as answers to the question.

 

  1. Integrated both the traditional rulers and educated elite to fight a common cause against colonial masters for the right of the African.
  2. The abrogation of repressive/oppressive laws.
  3. The emergence of active and nationalist newspapers to enlighten Nigerians about the evils of colonialism.
  4. The spread of political education and promotion of national consciousness.
  5. Reforms in the Judiciary.
  6. Gradual political and constitutional reforms
  7. Introduction of the elective principle.
  8. Formation of vibrant organizations/associations with the objective of fighting the cause and rights of the Africans.
  9. Formation and development of political parties e.g NNDP, NYM.
  10. The emergence of militant trade unions, pressure groups/interest groups.
  11. Economic growth and development.
  12. Inculcated high sense of patriotism.
  13. Improvement in educational facilities and establishment of higher institutions e.g. Yaba College.
  14. Improvement in health facilities.
  15. Improvement in communication network, i.e. roads, railways, telecommunication etc.
  16. Inclusion of the Africans in both the Executive and Legislative Councils.
  17. Africanisation of the civil and public services.
  18. Emergence of nationalist leaders who played key roles in the struggle against colonial authorities.
