List five factors that contributed to the growth of political parties in British West Africa.

Observation

This was a popular question. Many candidates that attempted it performed below average as they fail to understand the demands of the question. The candidates were expected to explain the following points in order to score good marks.

 

  1. Desire for independence from colonial rule.
  2. The harsh effects of the post-World War era (World War II) i.e. economic and social problems.
  3. Inspiration from political parties in India, Pakistan and Burma.
  4. Pan African Congresses helped to promote the formation of political parties.
  5. Emergence of dynamic leadership and personalities.
  6. The emergence and impact of nationalist newspapers.
  7. The social, economic and political injustices of the colonial administration.
  8. The improvement of transport and communication network.
  9. The spread of western education.
  10. The emergence of the elite and urbanization.
  11. The desire of the indigenous people to be represented in governance.
  12. The introduction of the elective principle in the colonies.
  13. The emergence of militant trade unions, pressure groups/interest groups.
