    4.  (a) State five duties of a centre referee during the game of football.          [5 marks]

    (b)  State five characteristics of the game of hockey.           [5 marks]

    (c)  State five duties of the court referee in a handball game.      [5 marks]

    (d) State five features of the volleyball game.               [5 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was very poor. 

In part (a) candidates correctly stated duties of a centre referee during the game of football.
In part (b) candidate could not correctly mentioned state characteristics of the game of hockey.

In part (c) candidates could not correctly state duties of the court referee in a handball game.

In part (d) candidates could not correctly state the features of the volleyball game.

The expected answers are as follows:

 

4(a)  DUTIES OF A CENTRE REFEREE DURING THE GAME OF FOOTBALL
He/She
-           takes final decision/explained
-           enforces the laws and regulations of the game
-            keeps record of goals scored
-           acts as timekeeper
-            stops the game whenever there is infringement, injury and serious weather condition
-             inspects and rejects unsuitable equipment
-             keeps the record of players to whom he issued yellow and red cards
-             compensates for any time lost with added time
-             inspects the football field
-             starts and end the games

 

(b) CHARACTERISTICS OF THE GAME OF HOCKEY
-           it is a ball game/it involves the use of ball
-           it is played on a rectangular pitch
-           it is played with stick
-           the ball is small, but very hard
-           played by eleven players on each side
-           goals can only be scored from the striking circle
-           there is penalty corner
-           the game is played, two halves of 35 minutes each
-           the goalpost is smaller than those of football game
-           the game involves the use of many protective equipment/named
-           players wear protective equipment
-           the game is controlled by the referee
-           the hockey game has a referee and umpires.

(c)  DUTIES OF THE COURT REFEREE IN A HANDBALL GAME
He/she
-           checks the physical appearance of the players, dresses and finger nails
-           checkers the ball and other equipment
-           conducts the toss for the teams to choose ends
-           controls and enforces the rules of the game
-           cautions the players
-           penalizes any infringement
-           keeps scores/records of the game
-           gives the timekeeper the signal to stop and start the clock
-           ensures that the score sheet is correctly completed.

(d)  FEATURES OF THE VOLLEYBALL GAME
-           it is started with a toss
-           it is an airborne game
-           it is played on a court
-           it is played by six players as a team at a time
-           the net consists of two antennae
-           the playing court consist of a net dividing the court into two parts
-           it is played with hands/explained

-           the termination of a game is based on point/explained.
