(a)  (i) Mention three lines on the hockey field.   [3 marks]
(ii) State five rules that guide a hockey player during a match.   [5 marks]
(iii) State two instances that could lead to award of the penalty corner
during a hockey game.       [2 marks]
(b)  Explain the following terms as used in the game of hockey:
(i)  back stick;        [2 marks]
(ii) bully.     [2 marks]
(c) State four safety precautions in the game of basketball.  [4 marks]
(d) Mention the two parts in which the volleyball court is divided into.  [2 marks]

Observation

 

 

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) (i) they did fairly well in it. In part (a) (ii) very few candidates showed mastering of  rules that guide a hockey player during a match. In part (a)(iii) many candidates could not correctly state two instances that could lead to award of the penalty corner during a hockey game.  In part (b) (i) and (ii) many could not explain back stick and bull as used in the game of hockey. In part (c) many candidates did well in it. In part (d) many candidates could correctly mention parts in which the volleyball court is divided into.  
However, the expected answers are as follows:
a(i)      Lines on the hockey field/pitch

  • 23m line/22.9m line
  • side line
  • centre line
  • goal line
  • back line                                                              

            (ii)       Rules that guide a hockey player during the match
a hockey player should not:

  • raise the stick above the head
  • use only the flat side/front side of the stick during play
  • change their stick before taken a free hit or penalty stroke
  • hit a ball in flight/air
  • obstruct an opponent/blocking an opponent
  • delay play
  • touch an opponent with the stick
  • intentionally enter the opponent goal area
  • run in front of another player
  • turn in a clockwise direction around the ball
  • raise the ball except for a shot at goal
  • swing hockey stick
  • hold and push an opponent
  • use foul language

            (iii)      Instances that could lead to the award of penalty corner during hockey game

  • if a defender commits a foul within the striking circle/explained
  • if the defender intentionally play the ball over the backline/explained
  • if the ball lodges in the defender’s clothing/equipment while in the circle
  • if a defender commits an intentional foul outside the circle within 23m area
  • if the defender intentionally commit an offence against a player who does not possess the ball within the circle

            (b)       Explanation of terms as used in the game of hockey
(i)        back stick
-is the using of the round part of the stick; to hit the ball during game situation.

(ii)       bully
-it is used to restart a game after two opposing players; committed an offence simultaneously/explained.                           

(c)       Precautions in the game of basketball

  • court should be free from dangerous objects
  • players should not wear long nails
  • players should not wear ornaments/named
  • basketball boards should be securely fixed
  • court should not be wet/slippery
  • playing court should be well lit when playing indoor
  • put on appropriate sports wear
  • players should play according to rules
  • never hang or swing on the basket ring

     
(d)       Parts in which the volleyball court is divided into

  • front court/attacking area
  • back court/defending area
