(a) Mention one use of each of the following in a volleyball game:

  1. antenna;
  2. 3 metres line;
  3.  net;
  4.  baseline.    [4 marks]

(b) (i) Explain how basketball game is started during a match.  [2 marks]
(ii) What is a tie in a basketball game?  [2 marks]
(iii) Explain how a tie is resolved in a basketball game.  [2 marks]

(c)  Explain the following terms as use in the game of basketball:

  1. rebounding;              [2 marks]
  2. pivoting.      [2 marks]

 (d)(i) State four instances in which free hit is awarded in a game of hockey.         [4 marks]

     (ii)  Mention two types of passes in the game of hockey.   [2 marks]

Observation

 

 

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and their performance was good. In part (a) (i)(ii)(iii) and (iv) they did well in it. In part (b)(i) majority of the candidates were able to explain basketball game is started. In part (b)(ii) many candidates could correctly defined a tie in a basketball game. In part (b)(iii) they did well in it.In part (c) (i) and (ii) few candidates correctly explained rebounding and pivoting as use in the game of basketball. In part (d) (i) and (ii) they did well in it.
However, the expected answers are as follows:
(a)       Use of each of the following in a volleyball game
            (i)        antenna

  • to assist in decision making when ball is returned from out of court around the net
  • it show court demarcated area                             

            (ii)       3 metres line

  • the limit of the area where back court players may spike from the court
  • it divides the court into front and back court      

            (iii)      net

  • indicates the height above which the balls must be played to opponents court
  • divides the court into halves                               

            (iv)      base line

  • the limiting area of the court behind which service is made
  • limiting area of the court behind which when a ball land is regarded as

 out of bound/the court/foul.

b(i)      Explanation on how basketball is started during a match

  • the game is started at centre of the court/with two opposing

players with a jump ball.                                                                   
(ii)       Explanation of tie in basketball game

  • a tie is a situation in which two opposing teams score the same points at the end of regulation time

            (iii)      Resolution of tie in basketball

  • extra time of five minutes is given/explained

     
(c)       Explanation of terms as used
(i)        rebounding
-it is the possession of the ball that missed the basket/that bounces
off the board.
(ii)       Pivoting
it is action taken by a player in possession of the ball to move in any
direction while keeping one foot in contact with the floor.                                      
d(i)      Instances when free hit is awarded in a game of hockey
when a player;

  • raises any part of the stick above shoulder
  • hits the ball dangerously
  • under cuts the ball
  • uses rounded side of the stick to push the ball
  • hits the ball between a player’s feet
